Lone Spirit joins the winner’s club

Andrew Carston-trained mare Lone Spirit joined the winner’s club on Sunday, when successful in the McIntosh Catering Maiden at Ashburton.

The four-year-old was quick away from the ace draw with Kylie Williams on board, they held the lead throughout the 1400m event and cruised away to win by one length on the line in easy fashion.

“We were pretty confident going into the race,” Carston said. “We had scratched her last week because she drew bad but from gate one around Ashburton we were pretty confident of a good run and it was a good positive ride from Kylie.”

Lone Spirit was bred and is raced by Northland-based couple Ray and Ann Cattle under their Anray Holdings banner.

“It was good to get another winner for Ray and Ann, they’ve been loyal supporters of mine,” Carston said. “They’ve had to be patient with Lone Spirit as she’s a little bit highly strung.

“She’s really benefited from having a varied training regime which includes spending plenty of time off the racecourse and on the farm with Nayton Mitchell.”

Lone Spirit is by former Windsor Park Stud-based sire Charm Spirit out of the High Chaparral mare Onmyown, from the family of stakes winners Myself, Single and Feel Glorious. A full brother to Lone Spirit is being offered at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale next month as Lot 97.
