Another successful Cromwell meeting for Carston

Cromwell continues to be a fruitful track for Christchurch based-trainer Andrew Carston.

Say Satono winning at Cromwell on Sunday.

He returned to Riccarton Park on Sunday evening with two winners and four placegetters across the two-day Central Otago meeting.

Waikato Stud-bred five-year-old Lippy was successful in the A1 Homes & A Woman’s Touch Clean (2030m) for Carston on Friday, with stable apprentice Yogesh Atchamah in the saddle.

Jumping from barrier five, Lippy settled in seventh position one off the rail, he made his run wide on the turn and led from the 100-metre mark, crossing the line three-quarters of a length ahead of second placed Take The Deel.

“Mr Chittick (Garry) leased him to me around four starts ago,” Carston said. “I race him now and it was a great result.”

Friday’s win was the son of Tivaci’s fourth career win from 33 starts and the first since June of this year, and he followed it up with a sixth on Sunday.

It was another Matamata-bred horse, Say Satono that was successful for Carston on day two of the meeting.

The Rich Hill Stud-bred son of Satono Aladdin, cinched victory in the Speights Rating 75 1400m by a head, with Kylie Williams onboard.

The five-year-old mare settled towards the back of the field with the leaders setting a hot pace, she came wide at the turn and showed good speed to get the win on the line.

“It was a good result she’s been exceptionally unlucky this whole preparation,” Carston said.
“Nothing has gone to plan, she’s had bad luck, bad draws, bad tracks but she deserved to win a race and it was good prize money today so it was a positive result."

Sunday’s race was worth $40,000 with Say Satono’s loyal group of owners netting $23,000 for the win.

“I’m just relieved that the owners have stuck by her,” Carston said. “Her last win was just over a year ago on New Zealand Cup Day, she’s had a couple of issues in between times so it was a good result for everyone involved.”

Complementing Carston’s two winners were place getters, Seven Twenty, Taimate Staar, Moguland Jon Ol Rocco who finished second in the Cromwell Cup for the second year in a row.

“They all went well, Carston said. “Jon Ol Rocco had terrible luck in the Cup, but he was courageous and there’s no doubt that the winner (Cappo Dell Impero) is a very good horse, he beat him last year too so full credit to the winner but we were a bit stiff.”
