Connections celebrate with Midsummer Magic after her win on Friday

Midsummer Magic recorded her second career win on Friday under a superb ride from Chris Johnson at Riccarton in the Hygain/Mitavite R65 (1200m).

“He is a genius when he gets it right,” trainer Andrew Carston said of Johnson.

“He rides for luck a lot and he gets it a lot.”

The five-year-old mare was backing up off a last-start fifth at Timaru a fortnight ago and Carston was confident of a good showing from his charge heading into the race.

“Her last two runs she has been unlucky so I was confident she would run well,” he said

“It was a lovely ride from Chris Johnson.”

Johnson settled the daughter of Zacinto midfield and when a gap presented itself before the line the pair flew through the middle to win by a length from Vasiliki.

Midsummer Magic was bred by the Micaela Murray Family Trust and did her North Island racing from the Stephen McKee stable before transferring to Carston late last year.

“I’m thrilled for the owners, the estate of Trevor McKee and the Murray Family,” Carston said.

“I’m confident the mare will go on with it and she is likely to have one more run before heading for a spell.”
